Homemade Corn Tortillas

Today I made homemade tortillas for the first time.

I used The Homesick Texan's recipe from her new cookbook.

I have been so excited to use this tortilla press I borrowed from my mom.

Masa balls.

My first tortilla!!!

They were smaller than what I expected. At first I didn't think they would be flexible enough to fold over for tacos; but as I kept stacking the finished ones under this towel, the steam made them more pliable.

One of my tacos. I didn't get enough fixins on this one. Although the tortillas are small, they are dense, and so require lots of fixins.

Josh's lunch tacos for tomorrow, doused with his beloved Cholula sauce.

P.S. I'm so into my hair today. It's so calm.

Hi Betsey - I popped by from the Homesick Texan. I literally can't get corn tortillas where I live (out of the country) and have tried to make them but found them really thick too - did you ultimately like the end result enough to do it regularly? I don't have a tortilla press so it is even harder. I make adobo sauce from dried chilis my mom has sent me (delicious!) and can replicate a pretty mean enchilada, but I have to do them with flour torts as the humble corn tortilla still eludes me.

I like your blog photo - very funny, very Plath. ;)

Hi Elena! I don't mind the thickness, but I would like them to be bigger around. Maybe it's that I didn't push down hard enough on the press, but I pushed as hard as I could. (I'm a bit of a weakling.)

I want to continue making them, only divide the masa dough into fewer portions to get larger tortillas.

Also, I haven't found a satisfactory way to reheat/resoften them. Other than dipping them in hot oil, that is. But if you're making enchiladas you'd be dipping them in oil anyway.

I got a tortilla press for Christmas... I'm dying to use it! I love thick tortillas, so I'm LOVING these! :)
